Where does South Scottsdale begin?
What is the first thing you think of when moving to a brand new city? If you’re like me then you said “will I be able to find my way around easily?” When my husband and I moved to Scottsdale, specifically South Scottsdale this became our number one concern. We were both pleasantly surprised how navigable Scottsdale is. But we were also a little confused. When we began talking to our neighbors about the city we kept hearing them refer to “North Scottsdale, South Scottsdale, Arcadia, Old Town etc..” Since my husband and I lived in what is known as South Scottsdale we began to explore there first. We wanted to know “Where does South Scottsdale begin?”
If you’re asking yourself, “shouldn’t it be easy to find boundaries?” Then you’re asking the same question I did. As I began my research I was surprised how many different answers I was finding. According to Wikipedia “To the south Scottsdale is bordered by Tempe. The southern boundary is also occupied by the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, which also extends along the Eastern boundary, which also borders Fountain Hills, the McDowell Mountain Regional Park and more unincorporated Maricopa County land.” They also go onto say “The city is loosely divided into four areas: South Scottsdale (McKellips Road north to Thomas Road), Old Town (Downtown) Scottsdale, Central Scottsdale (also known as the “Shea Corridor”, extending from Camelback Road north to Shea Boulevard), and North Scottsdale.”
I found an interesting article recently from the online newspaper ArizonaCentral.com. The author Michael Clancy of The Republic had this to say “On the north, Cave Creek Road between Pima and the national forest boundary is a fairly good border line. But Desert Mountain, the gated and exclusive golf community north of Cave Creek Road, is within city limits.
On the east, 136th Street defines the city for several miles between Fountain Hills and Stagecoach Pass.
Just south of Shea Boulevard and the east side Pima Road mark the city’s line at the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, both straight as an arrow. McKellips forms a portion of the southern boundary, and Scottsdale Road a good length of the western side of town. Few of them remain straight lines, however.
Are you confused yet? Don’t be! The boundaries of South Scottsdale are obviously defined by who you are asking at the moment. As Realtors my husband and I define South Scottsdale by four zip code areas. Since these four areas are our primary market we have become very familiar with the defined and undefined boundaries.
South Scottsdale Schools
Scottsdale schools are ranked some of the Best schools in the country. Jeff Thomas, associate superintendent for the Scottsdale Unified School District, said the city couldn’t have nabbed No. 1 without Scottsdale’s great teachers and school leaders.
“You would be hard-pressed to find a community more engaged in education for children than Scottsdale,” he said. “We take a comprehensive approach to meeting the needs of every child.”
